Compress PDF to 500 KB
For resumes, CVs, and portfolios on job portals that cap uploads at 500 KB. Text stays selectable unless the only way under is to turn pages into images, and the result screen tells you if that happens.

What to expect
What fits in 500 KB
500 KB is at the strict end of resume and CV upload limits. Some job boards and applicant tracking systems (ATS) reject anything larger, and a plain text resume rarely has a reason to be that big.
If your resume is all text, the tool only repacks the file's internal structure. Nothing on the page changes, and the text stays selectable and searchable, which matters for ATS software that reads resume text directly.
A headshot, a scanned signature, or a designed portfolio layout is usually what makes a resume big. Those images get re-encoded at the highest quality that still fits under 500 KB.
A text-only resume
Usually fitsExported from Word or Google Docs, it's only repacked. Nothing on the page changes and ATS software can still read the text.
A resume with a headshot
Usually fitsThe photo is re-encoded at the best quality that still fits, and the text is left alone.
A designed portfolio
Often tightSeveral large images share one 500 KB budget, so each one gets re-encoded harder.
A resume with scanned certificates attached
Often tightEvery scanned page adds a full-page image. Two or three of them can take the whole budget.
How it works
How the tool gets to 500 KB
Choose your PDF
It opens in your browser, with the target already set to 500 KB. Nothing is uploaded.
The tool works down to 500 KB
It repacks the file and re-encodes its images, tries several quality levels, and keeps the highest one that fits. For image-heavy files that still don't fit, pages can be turned into images as a last resort, and the result screen says when that happened.
Check the result, then download
You see the measured size of the file you'll get. If 500 KB wasn't reachable, you get the smallest version the tool made, marked as a best effort.
Still too big?
If it won't get under 500 KB
The result screen tells you when a target wasn't reached. These are the options that usually get a file through.
Send the portfolio as its own file
If the portal has a separate slot, split the resume from the samples with Split PDF.
Export the resume again, smaller
Word's Save as PDF dialog has a "Minimum size (publishing online)" option that downsamples images before this tool ever sees them.
Use the digital original, not a scan
A certificate you can download as a PDF is usually far smaller than a scan of the printed copy.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Will my resume still be text-searchable after compressing to 500 KB?
If it has no images, yes: the tool never turns a text-only PDF into page images. If it includes a photo and nothing else gets it under 500 KB, the tool may convert pages to images as a last resort. The result screen tells you when that happens, and a larger target keeps the text.
My portfolio PDF has images and won't get under 500 KB. What happens?
The tool re-encodes the images at the highest quality that still fits. If 500 KB isn't reachable, you get the smallest version it could make, labeled as a best effort, and you can decide whether it's good enough to send.
Is 500 KB a real limit job portals use?
Upload limits vary by portal. Some ATS systems and job boards cap resume uploads well under 1 MB. If you're not sure what yours requires, check its upload instructions; we don't guess at any specific system's limit.
