What to expect

What fits in 1 MB

1 MB is a common PDF upload limit. Job application portals, university and scholarship applications, and general online forms often draw the line here.

Most resumes, cover letters, and short application documents fit under it. When a file is all text, the tool only repacks its internal structure, so the pages look the same and the text stays selectable.

1 MB gets tight with a resume that has an embedded photo, several documents exported as one PDF, or a scanned transcript with several pages. For those, the tool re-encodes the images at the highest quality that still fits.

  • A resume and cover letter

    Usually fits

Mostly text, so they're repacked with nothing on the page changing. A photo or logo is re-encoded if needed.

  • A scanned transcript of a few pages

    Usually fits

Each page gets a reasonable share of 1 MB. Open the result and check the grades are readable.

  • A merged application packet

    Depends

Scans inside it decide the outcome. Combine the documents with Merge PDF first, then compress the merged file here.

  • A long scan of 30 pages or more

    Often tight

1 MB across that many page images leaves little for each one. Consider whether every page is needed.

How it works

How the tool gets to 1 MB

  1. Choose your PDF

It opens in your browser, with the target already set to 1 MB. Nothing is uploaded.

  2. The tool works down to 1 MB

It repacks the file and re-encodes its images, tries several quality levels, and keeps the highest one that fits. For image-heavy files that still don't fit, pages can be turned into images as a last resort, and the result screen says when that happened.

  3. Check the result, then download

You see the measured size of the file you'll get. If 1 MB wasn't reachable, you get the smallest version the tool made, marked as a best effort.

Still too big?

If it won't get under 1 MB

The result screen tells you when a target wasn't reached. These are the options that usually get a file through.

  • Split the packet into separate uploads

Many application forms have one slot per document. Split PDF can cut a packet back into its parts.

  • Leave out pages you weren't asked for

Remove extra pages in Organize PDF Pages and compress again.

  • Swap scans for digital originals

An official PDF from your school or bank is usually much smaller than a scan of the printout.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

See all frequently asked questions
I need my resume under 1 MB for a job portal — will this get me there?

For a typical text-based resume or CV, usually yes. If it has a photo or a heavily designed layout, the images get re-encoded too, at the highest quality that still fits under 1 MB.

Can I combine my resume, cover letter, and transcript into one PDF and compress it here?

Yes. Combine them with the Merge PDF tool first, then compress the merged file here. This page works on one PDF at a time.

What happens if my scanned transcript can't reach 1 MB?

A scan has less room to shrink than a text document. If 1 MB isn't reachable, you get the smallest version the tool made, marked as a best effort, and you decide whether to use it. A target is only shown as reached when the measured file is actually under it.
